How Many Invitations Should I Order?

A Guide to Ordering Letterpress Wedding Invitations

When it comes to ordering your wedding stationery, one of the first things you’ll need to decide is the number of invitations you’ll need. Keep in mind that you won't need as many invitations as guests! Many of your guests will be couples or families who'll only require one invitation. A wedding of 120 guests, for example, may only require 60 - 70 invitations. Some recommend using 60% as a rough figure for determining the number of invitations required.

Make a List

The best way to determine the number of invitations you'll need is to create a spreadsheet or list of your guests. Keep a count of the number of guests per invitations as well as the number of invitations needed as this will help with your planning down the track. Be sure to include your families and yourselves on your list, as your invitations will be an item you and your families will treasure as a keepsake for years to come.

Add Extras

Once you have determined the number of invitations you'll need, add an extra 10 - 20% to cover for any late additions or changes to your guest list. It is common to accidentally miss guests of the list or have families add unexpected extras. With the setup costs involved in printing your stationery, it is a wise (and cheaper) option to include a few spares in your initial order.


Depending on how your envelopes will be addressed you might also like to order extra envelopes. We include an extra 10% addressable envelopes in your order to cover you for any addressing errors or mistakes. If you'll be handwriting addresses or organising a calligrapher for your guest details, we recommend an extra 10 - 20% envelopes so you might like to add a few extras to your total.

Handwriting & Calligraphy

If you will be handwriting or organising calligraphy on any pieces such as guest names on your Invitations or handwritten Thank you cards, you may like to order extras to cover for any mistakes. 10-20% extra will normally be sufficient for this purpose.
